If your event requires multiple smaller tents, you can often avoid a permit as long as the tents are spaced at least 3 metres (about 10 feet) apart. However, if they are joined together, the city views them as one large structure.

You might have the perfect spot in mind next to the garden, but local bylaws usually require a 3-metre setback from all property lines and other buildings. This is for fire safety and to ensure emergency access if needed.
